Women In Defense traces its roots to 1979 when a group of women saw the need for women in the defense industry and military to have a network to expand their knowledge of national security issues and the defense community. Membership in Women In Defense is open to professional women and men whose primary professional activities relate to national security. Members are typically from defense companies and other businesses, both small and large; all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, plus federal government agencies; and academia, associations, and professional services.
Chapter membership is a valuable benefit of belonging to Women In Defense because of the local business and professional contacts and knowledge available. Members are automatically assigned to the nearest geographic chapter, based on zip code. Chapter membership does not require an additional dues payment.
Through the HORIZONS Scholarship, established in 1988, Women In Defense encourages women to pursue careers related to the national security and defense interests of the United States and to provide development opportunities to women already working in national security and defense fields. The scholarship is designed to provide financial assistance to further educational objectives of women who are U.S. citizens either employed or planning careers in defense or national security areas
Women In Defense is proud to currently host three national events each year - the Service to the Flag Award Ceremony, the HORIZONS Scholarship Celebration and an annual National Conference. Women In Defense's chapters also host a variety of events throughout the year across the country. Check back frequently for updates!
